About the Sci-Fi Spacecraft Custom Urn

This custom urn is extremely unique. It’s a spacecraft-inspired design, and we had a couple of challenges in creating it. One of the issues was designing it to hold 220 cubic inches of ashes while staying as close to the customer’s vision as we could. Delivering it was also a challenge because of its size. Our customer wanted it to be large because she was going to display it on a table in her home. We ended up hiring a freight company to deliver it and worked with the customer to schedule that delivery so she could get it safely.

Inspiration

This customer wanted the spacecraft urn to honor her husband, who was a huge fan of Star Wars. Since she planned to display it on a table to memorialize him, it had to fit a certain size requirement while also holding all the ashes. Of course, it also needed to look as close to the original as possible and was the largest 3D print we've done. With a wingspan of 34 inches, this urn ended up just under 1:15 in scale to the fantasy spacecraft, which would measure 13.4 meters if it existed. In comparison, mass-produced hobbyist scale model kits for a spacecraft like this only scale to 1:72.

Process

Creating the Model

We created this model through the use of several different software programs specifically designed for 3D modeling purposes. This took more time than it normally would because of the size, design requirements, and detail that had to be handled to create the model. When the customer approved it, we got it ready to print.

Printing

It can take up to 24 hours to print a 3D custom urn, and this one had to be printed in multiple pieces due to its size and complexity. The goal was to make sure each piece printed successfully before moving to the next one.

Post-Printing Process

After printing was complete we cleaned up all the pieces, let them harden, and checked them all for quality. Perfection isn't always easy to achieve, but it's important to get as close as possible with something as important as an urn.

Painting

The detail required on this piece was a challenge for our in-house painting team, but the urn turned out beautifully and the customer was very happy with it. While most of the body of the urn is white, the color details were an important part of making the urn look as close to the customer’s request as possible.

Final Touches

For the final touches we carefully went over the spacecraft to ensure we hadn't missed anything, including the detail for the cockpit windows and the markings on the wings. Once all the final touches are done, the next step is shipping it to the customer.

You'd be forgiven for thinking this crisp, detailed model is simply a display piece, but removing the back plate reveals its functionality as an urn, where ashes can be inserted into the spacecraft’s body.
