The Starbucks Cup Urn

Because an urn is such a personal type of memorial for your loved one's cremains, you want to make sure you can honor their life with its design. The best way to do that is to consider the nearly unlimited options offered by a 3D-printed custom urn, so you can design something that's exactly how you want to remember them.

About the Starbucks Cup Urn

This urn was a custom Starbucks drink cup for a customer who was honoring her son. She wanted the cup to look as realistic as it could, including the logo, color choices, overall design, and even the little boxes to mark down information about the drink. Her son's name was Joseph, and the engraving on this urn included the line "A Golden Cup of Joe" to acknowledge his vibrancy in life while keeping the coffee theme.

Inspiration

Our customer's son was a huge Starbucks fan and an avid coffee drinker, so it seemed only fitting that she would have an urn made for him that represented his enjoyment of coffee and Starbucks. His image was added to the top of the cup's lid, which opens to insert the ashes. Realism was the goal for this urn.

Process

Creating the Model

We use a number of different computer software programs for the 3D modeling of our custom urns. This takes time, especially when there are a lot of specifics or fine details to consider. Once all the modeling is done we get customer approval, and then the model goes to the printer.

Printing

The size of the urn and the complexity of the detail involved will determine how long it takes to print it, with the process taking as long as 24 hours in some cases. For this print it didn't take as long, as most of the detail work is in the painting.

Post-Printing Process

Once the printing is done, we move on to clean-up work to remove any small imperfections from the print process. The print also has to harden, and it goes through a quality check as part of our commitment to ensuring that it looks just right.

Painting

All our 3D custom urns are painted in-house, and it's our goal to make them look just the way the customer wants. For this particular urn the goal was realism, as the customer wanted it to be as accurate to a real Starbucks cup as possible. We focused on the perfect shade of green and recreating cup details such as the check boxes for drink options.

Final Touches

Between paint detail, engraving options, stickers, and more, we're able to make just about anything. The final touches that went into this urn really made it look like it came straight out of Starbucks, right down to the logo and drink options. Finally, it was time to send the urn to our customer.

Urn Details

Starbucks' logo is iconic and unmistakable. We didn't want to get it wrong or have the cup misrepresent what it was supposed to convey, so we took our time making sure our recreation of the logo was accurate.

This urn's lid looks like the lid for a Starbucks cup, right down to the lip that fits over the cup and the spot to drink from. Even though it's a solid piece, there's enough of an indentation to create realism and the suggestion that you could pick up the cup and take a sip of coffee. A photo of Joseph was later printed on the top of this lid.

On the back of the urn is the Starbucks name, along with the check boxes for decaf, milk options, number of espresso shots, syrup, and other customization. This urn came out extremely well and our customer was very happy with the end result.

This urn's details mirror a Starbucks paper cup, with an extra inscription to honor the loved one interred within. At eight inches tall and five inches in diameter, it proudly eclipses the size of a venti Starbucks cup.
