About the Recliner Keepsake Urn
This custom recliner urn was made for our customer's late father, who had a favorite recliner that he spent a lot of time in. It was sized as a keepsake urn, meaning that it holds a portion of an adult's cremated remains rather than a complete amount. 50 cubic inches of ashes can be stored inside this urn, and it measures just over 7 inches tall.
Inspiration
When our customer was deciding on the kind of urn she wanted for her father, she thought of how much her father liked to relax in his recliner and the time he spent there. A lot of our customer's memories of her father revolve around seeing him in his recliner, comfortable and happy. Our customer quickly realized that the recliner represented something very important about her father, and that a recliner-shaped urn would be a wonderful way to memorialize his life.
Process
Creating the Model
This custom recliner model was created in the same way we handle other 3D urn printing tasks. We have several software programs used for modeling, and that allows us to get the image, size, and design just right. This is a very important part of the process to ensure that the finished product comes out the way we and the customer expect it to. Once the model is customer-approved, we can start printing.
Printing
It can take up to 24 hours to print a custom urn, and the size and detail both affect that timeline. This recliner was a smaller print because it was a keepsake urn meant to hold only a portion of the deceased's ashes, but it still needed to have the right shape to replicate the customer's father's recliner.
Post-Printing Process
Quality checking, hardening, and cleanup are all post-printing requirements to ensure that the urn is ready to move to the next stage. Once all this is done, the urn moves to the next part of the creation process, which is painting.
Painting
In-house painting is important because having our own detailers helps us follow the painting process and make sure everything is done exactly the way it should be. For this design there wasn't as much fine detail as in some other urns, but we still wanted to make sure the recliner was the right color and had the right overall look to keep the customer happy with their choice.
Final Touches
The final touches allowed us to give the recliner a leather appearance, along with the shine that was expected on the arms and other areas. We were committed to giving the customer an urn that truly represented her father's recliner, and a flat-black paint job without any highlighting wouldn't have done that.
Urn Details
It might not seem like a recliner would have much detail, especially with a solid-color presentation, but there was a lot of little detail that went into getting this urn just right. It needed a soft, luxurious look that resembled comfortable leather, and the generous shape of the modeled cushions coupled with a quality paint job produced that feel.
To further personalize the image of this recliner, our customer had us inscript words of remembrance and her father's details on the urn. This transformed the urn from a generic black leather recliner to a unique recliner dedicated to her father.
To insert ashes, the bottom of the recliner comes off to reveal a hidden compartment. When the urn is closed, one can see the lever on the recliner's side to raise and lower the foot rest, and the foot rest partially extended.
Gallery
Even though the recliner is black, the glossy finish gives depth, volume, and realism to the urn, suggesting a leather material resembling the actual recliner. This is an urn that the customer can cherish for years, helping her feel close to her father as she memorializes him in such a beautiful and honest way.

Before we painted this custom urn, this model came out of our 3D printer in the same off-white as the gypsum powder it was formed from.
